Opinion: Vancouverites would welcome an end to the taxi cartel

By Sean Bellamy McNulty

On a recent cab ride home from the airport, I got into a discussion with the cab driver, Gene, about why the taxi service was so poor in Vancouver, especially on the weekends. Having just moved back from Hong Kong, where cabs were plentiful, I was amazed at how difficult it was to catch a cab on Friday and Saturday nights in downtown Vancouver. It could literally take hours, especially during peak times when night clubs closed. This issue had even been the subject of a recent Huffington Post article titled Welcome To Vancouver: No Fun City.
